Who is a Panchayat Executive Officer (PEO)?
PEO stands for Panchayat Executive Officer. It is a key post in the administrative and development work of the Gram Panchayat, overseeing local government at the village level.
Role of the PEO in the Panchayat
The PEO is the administrative head of the Gram Panchayat, responsible for carrying out government schemes and managing funds. PEOs are the main custodians of the Gram Panchayat's assets and make sure state and central policies are followed.
The role is vital for putting government policies into practice and for the development of rural areas in Odisha.
Responsibilities
- Carrying out flagship central and state schemes such as MGNREGA, PMAY (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana) and SBM (Swachh Bharat Mission).
- Managing funds and ensuring proper credit linkage for Self-Help Groups (SHGs).
- Building strong, lasting local institutions.
- Basic training and supervision during the probation period.
- Eligibility for promotion after a fixed period of service and passing departmental examinations.

1,501 PEO vacancies announced
The Panchayati Raj & Drinking Water Department, Government of Odisha, has announced 1,501 vacancies for the PEO post, a Group-C district cadre post governed by the Odisha Panchayat Executive Officers Service Rules, 2021. Of these, 1,268 are fresh vacancies and 233 are backlog vacancies from previous years.
The recruitment will be conducted by OSSSC. The official notification is expected soon on www.osssc.gov.in.
